The Story Never Told: The Fate of Iraq’s Jews

Event Details

The Breman Museum is hosting an oral history presentation by Maurice Shohet. Mr. Shohet will be speaking in conjunction with our exhibition Discovery and Recovery: Preserving Iraqi Jewish Heritage.

Mr. Shohet will discuss the history of Iraq’s Jewish community, exploring its decline from a once thriving community to today’s reality of a dispersed, diaspora existence. In addition, as a Jewish Iraqi refugee himself, he will share personal anecdotes related to the history of Jews in Iraq.

Mr. Shohet, was a bar mitzvah in Baghdad in 1963, fled Iraq in 1970 and returned again in 2004 in an effort to help preserve sites of Jewish importance. Maurice was a member of the Committee of Experts that evaluated the “Iraqi Jewish Archives”.

He is the President of the World Organization of Jews from Iraq (WOJI) and he works at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and lives in Washington, DC.
