More about Dr. Ruth

Before she became a well-known figure, Dr. Ruth Westheimer had a remarkable life filled with diverse experiences. At just 10 years old, this German-born individual found herself in a Swiss orphanage, a refuge for those seeking to escape the horrors of the Holocaust. Later on, she embarked on a journey to Israel, where she joined the ranks of the Haganah, the Jewish freedom fighters, serving as a sniper. After a stint in Paris as a dedicated schoolteacher, she eventually made her way to the United States, where her academic pursuits led her to the field of sociology.

It wasn't until her time with Planned Parenthood that Dr. Ruth Westheimer began her mission to engage in candid conversations about sexuality. In 1980, she kickstarted her radio show, "Sexually Speaking," on a New York radio station. Initially spanning a modest 15 minutes, the show quickly gained a massive following. Within a year, she expanded it into a two-hour live broadcast under the moniker "Dr. Ruth." This iconic show endured for a decade and catapulted her into the realm of stardom, leading to subsequent television series on various networks. Alongside her broadcasting success, she also authored over 25 books and even had a board game bearing her name.
