Join Associate Professor of History at Georgia State University, Dr. Marni Davis, as she discusses her research on the old Jewish neighborhood of Atlanta. The class will be moderated by ethnographer of the Atlanta Sephardic community, Dan Maslia.
BIOGRAPHY
Associate Professor of History at Georgia State University, Dr. Marni Davis is a historian of ethnicity and immigration in the United States. She is the author of Jews and Booze: Becoming American in the Age of Prohibition (New York University Press, 2012), which was a finalist for the Sami Rohr Prize in Jewish Literature. Davis is currently researching and writing about White ethnic and African-American neighborhoods in twentieth-century Atlanta, and the relative impacts of redlining, urban renewal, and suburbanization upon these neighborhoods.
Dan Maslia is the child of Sephardic Jewish immigrants from Izmir, Turkey. He is a lifelong member of Congregation Or VeShalom and spearheaded their Founders Map Project, an effort to geographically document the founding Sephardic community in Atlanta. Beyond his involvement at Or VeShalom, Mr. Maslia has served in volunteer leadership positions at the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, the Atlanta Jewish Community Center, and Jewish Family & Career Services.
