Be a part of the story!
Curating Your Family Story is an initiative begun last year by the Breman Museum in partnership with Beit Hatfutsot, the Museum of the Jewish people, based on the enduring My Family Story initiative. Now in its 22nd anniversary year, My Family Story is a fun-filled, meaningful, personal, global, and multigenerational Jewish heritage journey, where the exploration of one’s Jewish family roots, genealogy and traditions culminates in an artistic piece that is entered into an international competition.
This year, Congregation Bet Haverim piloted a multi-disciplinary program that brought a group of teens to the Cohen Retirement Home over a seven-month period to visit with senior citizens residing there. They met one to two times each month to forge personal relationships with each other and pass stories from one generation – dor, in Hebrew – to the next. Each teen worked with a senior to choose an object from the senior’s life that was uniquely characteristic of his/her family and values. Exhibited here are the chosen artifacts, and the stories that the teens wrote about the objects and their experiences becoming mindful listeners and bearers of history.
